Bamboo Island — learn Chinese island by island

Somewhere along the way, "free" started meaning "you are the product." We'd like to report that it doesn't have to.

The three nos

Bamboo Island has no accounts, no ads, and no subscription. Not "no ads unless you pay," not "no account needed for basic features." No. Every learning path — Stories, Talks, Reading, Flashcards, Remember — is free, with no login screen between you and it.

What privacy actually means here

The app works offline because the whole engine — dictionary, word segmentation, pinyin, scheduling — lives on your phone. Everything you create stays on your device. There is no cloud copy of your stories, because there is no cloud in the app at all. If you delete it, it's gone. That's what privacy should mean: a fact about the architecture, not a paragraph in a policy.

One unlock, one time

There is exactly one optional purchase: extended recording practice. The free version includes 2-minute recordings you can delete and redo as often as you like; the one-time unlock extends that — buy-once, not monthly, not yearly. If we ever add a second paid thing, you'll read about it here first.

Why this is a feature, not a limitation

We built this for our own family — for kids' devices we didn't want attached to ad networks, and for a shelf life measured in decades, not fiscal quarters. An app that respects you is also an app you can hand to a child, recommend to a teacher, and still be using in ten years.
