Bamboo Island — learn Chinese island by island

When we started sketching Bamboo Island, the hardest question wasn't what to build. It was what shape the learning itself should take. Most apps answer with a staircase. We chose an archipelago.

One course, or five paths?

A course is a line: Lesson 1, Lesson 2 … Lesson 400, someday. Lines are great for grammar drills and terrible for life, because life doesn't arrive in order. Your day shows up as a story you want to tell, a word you want to keep, a conversation you wish you could have had.

So instead of one line, the app is organized into five paths — Stories, Talks, Reading, Flashcards, and Remember. Each path builds a different skill, and each one is small enough to hold in your head.

The five, briefly

  • Stories — your own days, told in Chinese. Three sentences and a photo count.
  • Talks — listen, then speak back. Conversations you can replay.
  • Reading — short graded lessons that grow with you.
  • Flashcards — review that adapts to memory.
  • Remember — each character becomes a vivid picture.

The part we're proudest of: they feed each other

Here's the design decision that took the longest and matters the most: every story and conversation you create automatically becomes flashcards. Write a story about breakfast, and its words show up in your review deck. Have a conversation, and its sentences are waiting the next morning. The more of your life flows through the app, the richer the deck grows — without you ever building a deck.

Stories seed conversations. Conversations seed reading. Cards hold it all, and Remember roots each character so it stops being a stranger. Five paths, one archipelago — each island you visit makes the next one easier to reach.

What we said no to

A leaderboard. A streak that shames you. A lesson map with four hundred locked dots. We cut them not because they're hard to build, but because every one of them whispers "you're behind." The five paths whisper something else: land here.

Moso months: what slow roots look like

October is the month when the new school year's energy runs out. The notebooks aren't new anymore, and the promised land feels far. Good. That's what this post is about. Years underground Plant a Moso bamboo seed — the giant of China's forests — and for years you'll see little above the ground but small shoots. Why Islands? — the idea behind Bamboo Island

A language isn't memorized. It's lived. Most learners drown in the ocean of a language. Open any textbook and it promises the same thing: keep swimming, and someday you'll arrive. That day never quite comes, because the ocean has no shore. Vocabulary lists stretch to the horizon. Grammar rules multiply like waves. Every lesson says "you're not there yet." Bamboo Island turns the ocean into ground you can walk. An island is finite. You can walk its shore, name its parts, and feel at home there.
